What is a Bridal Shower?

The bridal shower is a wonderful occasion for ladies to get together and to celebrate the upcoming marriage of a friend or a loved one. The tradition is most popular in the US, though some believe it originated in Belgium back in the 1860s.

A bridal shower is a relatively informal occasion. It is a small party before the wedding takes place. The bridal shower gives the bride-to-be a chance to relax and to spend some quality time with friends and relatives.

Why a ‘shower’? The earliest bridal showers were organized to ‘shower’ the bride-to-be with presents. According to another version, the presents that guests brought were put inside a parasol. Once opened, the parasol would shower the bride-to-be.

Who Hosts the Bridal Shower?
The hostess of the bridal shower could be any close friend or relative of the bride-to-be. Traditions have changed and today the party is guided by fewer regulations.

Traditionally, the maid of honor is the person responsible for organizing the party and inviting the guests.

The hostess coordinates her activities with the bride-to-be. The bridal shower takes place several weeks before the wedding or on any date that is convenient for the future bride. The bride can also have her input in terms of theme, decorations and food.

Who Gets Invited to the Bridal Shower?
The bridal shower is an intimate party. It usually involves small groups of people – the people who are closest to the bride-to-be.

Relatives, best friends and coworkers get invited to the party. Acquaintances and business partners could also attend, in case the bride wishes to spend time with more people.

Traditional bridal showers are all-female. Recently, this tradition got broken, as well. Mixed bridal showers are now organized. Both the bride to be and her future husband are invited, as well as their closest friends.

What Happens During the Party?
In its heart, the bridal shower is a party and an occasion for people to communicate, to get to know new individuals and to celebrate the wonderful event that is going to take place in the near future.

There is no strict agenda in terms of party stages and activities.

The bride-to-be and the hostess have to be present before everyone arrives, making sure that guests are welcomed appropriately. People are invited to the room or the garden, in case the bridal shower is held outdoor.

Food and drinks are available. Guests sample dishes and beverages while talking to each other and having fun.

Bridal shower activities and games are selected to correspond to the theme and to break the ice, especially if the guests are mostly unfamiliar with each other. These games are mostly humorous and designed to entertain people.

The next part of the party is cutting and eating the bridal shower cake, while the bride-to-be opens the gifts she has received. Each gift is given individual attention and the process could be somehow lengthy. The bride-to-be gets a chance to thank everyone for the party.

Some bridal showers include a speech by the hostess, as well. The speech is usually a short one and it involves an anecdote about the bride-to-be or a personal story that the hostess wishes to share with everyone.

Today, bridal showers come in many shapes and sizes. They could be humorous, classy or very emotional. The venue and the theme depend solely on the imagination of the hostess. Traditions have changed over the years, turning bridal showers into contemporary events and beautiful celebrations of love.
